The common labels, decoded
- Early Release (NGC) / First Strike (PCGS) — The coin was received by the grader within the first weeks of the Mint’s release. A timing designation, not a quality one.
- FDOI — First Day of Issue — Submitted/received on the official first day the Mint released the coin. Scarcer than Early Release, so it often carries a higher premium.
- FYOI — First Year of Issue — The coin is from the first year a design or series was produced (e.g., a 1986 Silver Eagle).
- Signed / hand-signed labels — The label is signed by a person connected to the coin (a designer or Mint official). Desirable signatures add a collector premium.
- Special label art — Flag, mint, or themed label designs; cosmetic, but some collectors target specific label styles.
Do labels add value?
Sometimes. A premium exists when enough collectors compete for that designation — FDOI and sought-after signatures are the clearest examples. But two coins of the same date and grade are numismatically identical; the label premium is for the designation, not better metal. Never overpay for a label on a coin you wouldn’t want without it.
What matters more than the label
- The grade (see MS70 vs PF70 vs MS69).
- The population at that grade.
- Eye appeal.
- The holder and a verifiable cert number (NGC vs PCGS).

Frequently asked questions
What does FDOI mean on a coin?
First Day of Issue — the coin was received by the grading service on the Mint’s official first day of release. It’s a timing designation that can carry a premium.
Is First Strike the same as Early Release?
Effectively yes — “First Strike” is PCGS’s term and “Early Release” is NGC’s term for a coin received within the early release window. Neither describes strike quality.
Do label designations make a coin more valuable?
They can, when collectors compete for that designation (FDOI, desirable signatures). The coin and grade still drive most of the value.
What is FYOI?
First Year of Issue — the coin is from the first year a series or design was made, like a 1986 American Silver Eagle.
